Integration with Android Health Connect

Easy Diet Diary can connect with Health Connect to share selected health information between Easy Diet Diary and other health and fitness apps on your Android device. This integration helps keep your weight, dietary energy intake, and exercise data in sync.

What is Health Connect?

Health Connect is a service built into Android that lets your health and fitness apps share data with each other, on your device. It isn't an app you open and use day-to-day, instead, it works in the background as a secure bridge between apps like Easy Diet Diary, Google Fit, Samsung Health, Garmin Connect, and Strava.

Because Easy Diet Diary connects to Health Connect rather than to each app individually, the data you actually see in Easy Diet Diary depends on which app is sending it, and what that app supports. See the App compatibility section below for more information.

What data is shared?

When Health Connect integration is enabled, Easy Diet Diary can share the following types of information:

Weight

Weight entries can sync two ways between Easy Diet Diary and other apps connected through Health Connect.

Weight logged in Easy Diet Diary can be written to Health Connect, where a compatible app can pick it up. Weight logged in a compatible app can also appear in Easy Diet Diary via Health Connect. Weight entries imported this way will show a Health Connect icon in your weight history.

Weight entries that originate from Health Connect cannot be edited in Easy Diet Diary. If you delete a weight entry in Easy Diet Diary that came from Health Connect, it will not be deleted in the original app.

Active Energy (Exercise)

Easy Diet Diary can read active energy data from Health Connect. Active energy represents energy burned through activity, above your resting energy use.

This energy will appear in Easy Diet Diary in the Exercise section of your diary day. By default, this activity can increase your daily energy remaining value. You can turn this off in Settings / Preferences if preferred.

Not every app reports active energy in a way Health Connect, and therefore Easy Diet Diary, can use. See App compatibility below.

Dietary Energy (Energy intake)

Easy Diet Diary can write dietary energy (energy consumed, i.e. calories or kilojoules) to Health Connect. Other apps may access this information through Health Connect. Whether an app makes use of it depends on the app itself.

How to enable Health Connect integration

You can enable Health Connect integration during sign-up or later in the Settings tab.

During sign-up

Continue through account setup. On the Final Setup screen, toggle Health Connect Integration on. You'll be taken to Health Connect to allow Easy Diet Diary access to the relevant data types.

After sign-up

  1. Open Easy Diet Diary
  2. Go to Settings
  3. Select App integrations
  4. Toggle on Sync weight, active energy & energy
  5. Follow the prompts to grant permissions in Health Connect

Managing Health Connect permissions

When you first enable the integration, Health Connect will ask you to allow Easy Diet Diary access to specific data types.

Updating your permissions

To manage the data that Health Connect and Easy Diet Diary share:

  1. Open the Health Connect app (or go to Settings > Apps > Health Connect on newer Android versions)
  2. Select Permissions and data (or App permissions)
  3. Choose Easy Diet Diary
  4. Follow the prompts to manage the data permissions

You can also manage which app provides each data type. For example, if you have both Google Fit and Garmin Connect installed, Health Connect lets you choose a priority order for weight data.

Resyncing weight entries

If some weight entries recorded in Easy Diet Diary are not appearing in your other app, you can manually resync them:

  1. Open Easy Diet Diary
  2. Go to Settings
  3. Tap App Integrations
  4. Select Re-sync weight entries

This will push any Easy Diet Diary weight entries that have not yet synced to Health Connect.

App compatibility

Health Connect integration works differently depending on which app you're syncing with, since each app decides what data it shares and how. Here's what we've found for the most common apps:

Samsung Health

Data Supported?
Weight (read from Samsung Health) ✅ Yes
Weight (write to Samsung Health) ✅ Yes
Dietary energy ✅ Yes
Active energy ✅ Yes

Google Fit

Data Supported?
Weight (read from Google Fit) ✅ Yes
Weight (write to Google Fit) ✅ Yes
Dietary energy ✅ Yes
Active energy ❌ Not supported

Google Fit records exercise calories under a "total calories burned" data type rather than the "active calories burned" type that Easy Diet Diary reads. As a result, exercise logged in Google Fit won't currently appear in your diary.

Garmin Connect

⚠️ Garmin Connect's Health Connect integration requires Android 14 or later.

Data Supported?
Weight (read from Garmin) ❌ Not supported
Weight (write to Garmin) ✅ Yes
Dietary energy ❌ Not used by Garmin Connect
Active energy ✅ Yes

Garmin Connect doesn't currently make weight data available to read via Health Connect, so weight logged on your Garmin device or in Garmin Connect won't import into Easy Diet Diary. You can still send weight from Easy Diet Diary to Garmin Connect, and exercise calories from Garmin devices will appear in your Easy Diet Diary diary.

Garmin Connect support is based on our preliminary testing and hasn't been fully verified across all devices. If you notice different behaviour, please get in touch.

Strava

Data Supported?
Weight (read from Strava) ✅ Yes
Weight (write to Strava) ❌ Not supported
Dietary energy ❌ Not used by Strava
Active energy ❌ Not currently

Strava doesn't accept weight data written from other apps via Health Connect, so weight logged in Easy Diet Diary won't appear in Strava. Weight logged in Strava can still be read into Easy Diet Diary.

Like Google Fit, Strava records exercise under "total calories burned" rather than "active calories burned," so exercise from Strava won't currently appear in your Easy Diet Diary diary.

Strava support is based on our preliminary testing and hasn't been fully verified across all devices. If you notice different behaviour, please get in touch.

Troubleshooting and Frequently Asked Questions

Why can't I see weight or active energy data from another app in Easy Diet Diary?

First, check the App compatibility section above. Not every app supports every data type. If your app should support the data you're missing, make sure:

  • Health Connect integration is enabled in Easy Diet Diary
  • The relevant permissions are granted to Easy Diet Diary in Health Connect
  • The other app has permission to write that data to Health Connect (check that app's own settings)
Why are weights I logged in Easy Diet Diary not appearing in my other app?

Some apps (like Strava) don't accept weight written by other apps. If your app does support this, try the Re-sync weight entries option:

  1. Open Easy Diet Diary
  2. Go to Settings
  3. Select App Integrations
  4. Tap Re-sync weight entries
Why doesn't my exercise from [app] show up in Easy Diet Diary?

A number of apps, including Google Fit and Strava, record exercise energy as "total calories burned" rather than "active calories burned." Easy Diet Diary currently only reads active calories burned via Health Connect, so exercise from these apps won't appear in your diary.

How do I stop exercise from changing my energy remaining value?

Active energy from Health Connect can increase your daily energy remaining value. To disable this:

  1. Open Easy Diet Diary
  2. Go to Settings
  3. Select Preferences
  4. Turn off Add exercise to energy budget

Exercise data will still appear in your diary but will no longer increase your energy remaining.

Can other health metrics be read from Health Connect?

At this stage, no. Weight and active energy are the only metrics Easy Diet Diary can read via Health Connect, and support for each depends on the app providing the data (see App compatibility above).

Can other nutrient data be written to Health Connect?

As above, at this stage weight and dietary energy are the only metrics Easy Diet Diary can write to Health Connect.
