Integration with Apple Health

Easy Diet Diary can connect with Apple Health to share selected health information between the apps. This integration helps keep your weight, dietary energy intake, and exercise data in sync.

What data is shared?

When Apple Health integration is enabled, Easy Diet Diary can share the following information:

Weight

Weight entries two-way sync between Easy Diet Diary and Apple Health.

Weight logged in Easy Diet Diary can be written to Apple Health. Weight logged in Apple Health or other apps connected to Apple Health can appear in Easy Diet Diary. Weight entries imported from Apple Health will show an Apple Health icon in your weight history.

Weight entries that originate from Apple Health cannot be edited in Easy Diet Diary. If you delete a weight entry in Easy Diet Diary that came from Apple Health, it will not be deleted in Apple Health.

Active Energy (Exercise)

Easy Diet Diary can read active energy data from Apple Health. Active energy represents energy burned through activity above your resting energy use.

This energy will appear in Easy Diet Diary in the Exercise section of your diary day. By default, this activity can increase your daily energy remaining value. You can turn this off in Settings / Preferences if preferred.

Dietary Energy (Energy intake)

Easy Diet Diary can write dietary energy (energy consumed i.e. calories or kilojoules) to Apple Health so other health apps can access this information.

How to enable Apple Health integration

You can enable Apple Health integration during sign-up or later in the Settings tab.

During sign-up

Continue through account setup. On the Final Setup screen, toggle Apple Health Integration on. Your device will display a permission popup asking you to allow access to Apple Health data.

After sign-up

  1. Open Easy Diet Diary.
  2. Go to Settings
  3. Select App integrations
  4. Toggle on Sync weight, active energy & energy
  5. Follow the prompts to grant permissions.

Managing Apple Health permissions

When you first enable the integration, iOS will ask for permission to access specific health data.

The permission popup appears only the first time you enable Apple Health integration. It will not appear again if you turn the integration off and on later, unless you uninstall and reinstall the app.

Updating your permissions

Because of Apple’s system restrictions, Easy Diet Diary cannot open the Apple Health permissions page directly. To manage the data that Apple Health and Easy Diet Diary share with each other:

  1. Open your Settings app
  2. On the General screen, select Apps and then select Health
  3. Choose Data access and devices and select Easy Diet Diary

Follow the prompts manage the data permissions.

Resyncing weight entries

If some weight entries recorded in Easy Diet Diary are not appearing in Apple Health, you can manually resync them. To do so:

  1. Open Easy Diet Diary
  2. Go to Settings
  3. Tap App Integrations
  4. Select Re-sync weight entries

This will push any Easy Diet Diary weight entries that have not yet synced to Apple Health.

Troubleshooting and Frequently Asked Questions

Why can’t I see weight or active energy data from Apple Health in Easy Diet Diary?

Firstly, ensure that Apple Health integration is enabled in Easy Diet Diary and that the required Apple Health permissions are enabled in your device settings. Without both enabled, data cannot sync between apps.

Why are weights I logged in Easy Diet Diary not appearing in Apple Health?

If you cannot see some weight data in Apple Health, try using the Re-sync weight entries option:

  1. Open Easy Diet Diary
  2. Go to Settings
  3. Select App Integrations
  4. Tap Re-sync weight entries

This will resend any Easy Diet Diary weight data that may not have synced.

How do I stop exercise from changing my energy remaining value?

Active energy from Apple Health can increase your daily energy remaining value. To disable this:

  1. Open Easy Diet Diary
  2. Go to Settings
  3. Select Preferences
  4. Turn off Add exercise to energy budget

Exercise data will still appear in your diary but will no longer increase your energy remaining.

Can other health metrics be read from Apple Health?

At this stage, no. Weight and active energy are the only metrics that can be read from Apple Health.

Can other nutrient data be written to Apple Health?

As with above, at this stage only weight and dietary energy are the only metrics that can be written to Apple Health.
